Karin Maurinsh Campbell

Where Was I?

Worked for Columbia Records in their A&R Dept. in Manhattan while living in Manhasset. Flew for Pan American from '63 'til '68, from Kennedy-New York, then ex San Francisco to cover their routes from both sides of the world.

Met husband Jack in Hawaii. Would have liked to be based in Honolulu but the requirement in those days was the Japanese language. Attended language Lab until teacher advised that tapes would be sent to Japan for screening and a “Tokyo accent” considered in passing. So much for that! Until 1969 there were only two airlines serving Hawaii – Pan Am and United. That year nine other carriers were awarded the route. I Joined Western Airlines in Sales and Customer Service to be taken over by Delta eventually. Married in '68 at Cannon Club on the slopes of Diamond Head, beginning my life as a “kamaaina” of nearly 40 years.

What Am I Doing?

When offered, I took early out from Delta's ground operations twelve years ago. Presently while at home in the Islands I joined Pan American's World Wings club helping to raise funds for both CARE and St. Francis Hospice locally. Fun meetings and reminiscing of unbelievable tales in far away places are a perk. My favored routes had been Beirut, Ankara and Tehran and Hong Kong.

Among much travel throughout the later years, Jack and I undertook a month long sojourn to South America including cruising around Cape Horn last December. This year New Zealand and Australia are in the offing.

What About My Family?

Jack and I met in Honolulu 1965. Retiring from the Attorney General's office in 1995, he was appointed as District Court Judge the same year. A mandate of retirement at age 70 sidelined him to retirement which he grudgingly is learning to appreciate.

Son Robert Mark joined us at age 4½ in 1973 – this adorable little boy kept us busy through the years – attending Punahou in Honolulu, then obtained degrees in Health and Phys. Ed. at I.S.U. where he was also defensive football player of the year – he played in the Hula Bowl at home one year.

We are a potpourri of nationalities, i.e.,

Karin – Latvian, born in Riga

Jack – Scottish descent, born in NY

Mark – Samoan/German married to

Tracey – Hawaiian/Norwegian

Their three boys:

Kaikona,

Kekoa,

Tamalii

My Message to the Class of '57

I can still visualize most of you as I close my eyes – we were so young, so anticipatory, it was thrilling to attend football and basketball games, the proms were the “coup de grâce.” Great Neck High was most formative for me in the “American ways.” Although my language barrier was huge, I loved living on Long Island – once in a while, I do miss the beauteous seasons there – but certainly not the very cold weather!

Please call – if any of you come to the Islands, I would love to visit with you.

A hui hou! – “Until we meet again…”
