Lynn Goldberg Small

After graduating from Bennington College as a French/drama major in l961, I married a Williams guy, Michael Small, in Florence, Italy where my parents were living at the time. We started our married life in Cambridge MA. Michael went to Harvard and I went to work as a model. We then moved to Manhattan where my two sons, Jonathan and David were born. I became manager of the D'Arcy Galleries specializing in African and pre-Columbian art for the 7 next years and it was during this period of working daily with sculpture and subsequently contemporary paintings that I started to make art myself. I began with wheel-thrown pottery and was soon working exclusively with porcelain which is a beautiful medium and easy on the hands. I was a ceramist for almost 25 years, teaching and exhibiting in New York, Westchester, and Los Angeles where we spent a lot of time as my husband was a composer of music scores for Hollywood features.

We left Manhattan for Dobbs Ferry and then Irvington when New York got a little scary in the 70's and returned, being New Yorkers at heart, as empty nesters in 1998. I continued with clay but needed a change and when we got back to New York I started to do portrait heads and figure sculpture. My husband passed away after a two year bout with cancer 4 years ago. We were very happily married for 43 years.

I have been studying oil painting 4 days a week at the National Academy for the past 2 years and loving the transition from clay. The rest of my time if I am not in Los Angeles with my grandchild, Elijah Michael, I am doing a scene class as acting has always been great fun for me. I still see many of my Great Neck Arrandale through Great Neck High friends on a regular basis.

My message to the class of '57?

Boy were we lucky to share those formative years in such a supportive atmosphere! We were told we were the brightest and the best and we believed it!

My very best to you all.

Lynn and grandson Elijah age one.
