Hedy Gaebel Jarvis

We live in Portland Connecticut on Penfield Farm. (52 Ames Hollow Road Portland Ct. 06480) The farm organically produces most of the food that we and our extended family eat. We raise chickens, geese, ducks, steer, sheep and pigs. We also care for an array of rehabilitated wildlife. My daughter and I both ride and at the moment we have two Percherons for fun.

I own Gable Construction. We do high end renovations to private homes and some State of Ct. renovation work. I am presently developing a large parcel of land in Scarborough Maine with both commercial and residential condo units. I have been in business for 35 years and obviously enjoy my work. You can see some of what I have done by checking out gableconstruction.com.

My husband Wal is in manufacturing. Jarvis Airfoil makes air foils for jet engines and Jarvis Surgical makes orthopedic implants. Wal also races in the Porsche Club Races at various tracks in the U.S. I have one daughter and two step sons, Victoria, Jason and Clayton. Victoria has her masters in fine art and is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Washington. She runs her own dog food business, thrivedogfood.com. Jason and Clayton both work for their father and are married with children. We have five grandchildren four girls and one boy. My mother who is now 96 years old lives on the farm with us. A nursing home wasn’t for us so here she is doing well and enjoying her life on the farm. My brother Ernie, a ’52 graduate of GNHS is living on Long Island on the water with his wife Ann.

Besides the farm and my work I enjoy our five dogs, the puppies our Cairn Terriers have, raising orchids, gardening, cruising Long Island Sound in our Cigarette Boat, reading, Broadway musicals, wildlife rehabilitation and traveling with Wal.

The class of ‘57 inspired me to be the best that I could be. Thank you.
