Where Am I?

After college, I received a Masters in Education from Harvard University and went to teach in Scarsdale. I went back to school twenty years ago and got a Masters in Writing. I moved to Manhattan when I started teaching and have been living here ever since. After all these years it is still a very exciting and stimulating place to be. I also have an old house (1740) in Newport, RI which is very peaceful if I can get there. 95 is usually a major problem!!

What Am I Doing?

I am still teaching and still loving it. I teach 5th graders and

teachers. I have written articles, chapters, and books on

teaching and learning. I have spoken at national conventions and have served on various boards having to do with education: the Holmes Group, The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Annenberg, and the National Council for Teachers of English Executive Board. I enjoy meeting with teachers from around the country at the conferences I attend.

What Else Keeps Me Occupied?

New York keeps me very busy. I enjoy getting together with friends for theater, ballet, museums, and discovering new restaurants. I also love to travel. During the past few years we have been especially interested in eastern Europe and have spent time in Prague, Budapest, Berlin, Estonia, and most recently St. Petersburg. I also enjoy traveling in Central America. However, southern France and the Amalfi coast remain favorites.

I’m interested in sports. I ran marathons for many years by myself and then with disabled runners. I played tennis and am now trying to learn how to play golf (I apparently need to give up some of my other interests and practice, practice, practice!). I cross country ski – Vail’s back country is very special. I started to take Spanish lessons this summer. To me it is similar to golf – lots of practice needed. I’m hoping to get more involved with photography and scupture.

I’ve been a cat lover all my life and have always lived with cats. I got a dog two years ago and am totally crazy about this little guy.

I still communicate with Miss Hicks, my sixth grade teacher at Kensington. We discuss teaching and teachers. She has a wonderful memory!
