Hello Y'all from Lovely Hotlanta, Georgia:
After 45˝ continuous years of teaching in the public schools in New York – Harlem (3˝ years), New City / Clarkstown / Rockland County (34 years), Montclair, New Jersey (6 years), and Kennesaw, Georgia (finishing up my 2nd year), I have come to the incredibly difficult conclusion (with the guidance and insightful input from Judy, my children and their spouses, and friends), that “retirement” would be in my best interest. At age 68, my body parts are starting to show some vague signs of wear and tear, and it is increasingly annoying for me to get up between 5:30 and 6:00 every morning, five days a week. Awtrey Middle School in Kennesaw has been a great place to teach. The students, parents, other teachers and staff, and the principal have been an awesome to work with these past two years.
I do plan to work part time at a college, perhaps Kennesaw State University (I already have an application in at that fine school), or one of the other colleges in the area as an adjunct professor of education (as I did for 6 fantastic years at Mercy College in Yorktown Heights, New York) or in the social sciences.
If you are somewhat surprised by this major decision, please be aware that I even shocked myself when I recently turned in my letter of resignation to my very supportive principal.
In the words of my Brandeis Alma Mater, this will be my opportunity for “new worlds to create.” |
